Drug checking and harm reduction service at events and in the community in Aotearoa since 2015.

World's first legal drug checking operation, doing the thing legally since 2021 😊
💛Chain stores were more likely to have an online presence with an age verification and delivery options

This provides some insights into what happens when you sell psychedelics openly. It could be interesting to compare to our legalization of piperazines or vape stores with Canadian dispensaries.

💛All dispensaries sold psilocybin in shroom form, but microdosing capsules and psilocybin infused gummies and chocolate was also common.

💛Only half of the dispensaries websites had an age verification check when entering the site.

💛Most (around 90%) of dispensary websites also had warnings about potential side effects of psilocybin, such as a bad trip. Some sites also recommended harm reduction measures such as starting with a low dose, having a trip sitter, and not mixing with other drugs

💛⅘ of psilocybin stores made health claims about psilocybin’s effectiveness in treating depression and anxiety. Dispensaries also made non-medical claims about increased creativity, wellness improvement, and psychedelic effects.

💛Only two websites cited their claims with academic studies.

👨‍⚕This usually reflected previous experiences they’d had, where GPs had told them to ‘just quit’ rather than focusing on harm reduction strategies

💛Almost all participants supported more access to drug checking for AAS users (fun fact: we can check most of them!)

💛Most interviewees engaged in harm reduction practices while on steroids. For instance, many participants had biannual blood tests and monitored their health.

💛Although some participants told their GPs about their steroid use, some were distrustful of talking to their GPs.

Interesting points for us were:

💛Many women interviewed wanted to avoid masculinising effects such as facial hair growth and deepening of the voice while on anabolic steroids

💛Some participants mentioned that there wasn’t enough education around how using steroids could impact fertility
