📣 Online platforms shape what we know, how we connect, and who gets heard, yet researcher access to public platform data is shrinking, while platforms monetize this data. Our new report "Better Access" offers a framework for accessing this critical data: kgi.georgetown.edu/research-and...

Platforms can design better algorithms. Our new guide serves as a resource for understanding how. bit.ly/3QzxVzq
The guide provides detailed explanations of how algorithms work. So much so, that it has been cited in an amicus brief to the Ninth Circuit led by @epic.org!

Our experiences online are shaped by algorithmic feeds used to determine what users see when scrolling their social media feeds and other online services. Documented harms include problematic overuse in teens, reduced user satisfaction, and polarization.

The path forward is clear: designing algorithms to promote long-term user value instead of short-term engagement.

Platforms and policymakers can make this happen through: 1️⃣ detailed transparency 2️⃣ better user choices and defaults and 3️⃣ assessing the long-term impacts of design changes.
March 4, 2025 at 1:00 PM
A key problem with this: 😵 some platforms optimize their algorithms to maximize “engagement” – the chance that users will click, like, share, or watch a piece of content. This design aligns well with tech platforms’ business interests, but has been linked to various harms like problematic overuse.
