Which on the side of storytelling overall, I personally resonate deeply with E33 for a variety of very personal reasons. It’s sitting up there with Eternal Sonata for me. But, yeah I totally agree the like idea of “oh /this/ is the jRPG I should play bc it’s ‘refined’” is a silly position to have.

To your point here, in the article you say that ToCS isn’t any “better or worse” than E33, and then say the line about respectability shortly thereafter, so I initially interpreted that as meaning the inherent uplifting of the story itself as “good” rather than some intrinsic “proper” value prop.

Similar thing happened on Stranger Things. Natalie Dryer (Nancy) and Charlie Heath (Jonathan) have been dating since the show started, but their stunt doubles are ALSO dating and engaged and their German (I think) dub-VAs are ALSO GETTING MARRIED.

I wouldn’t say no to another Gunvolt either, but something about seeing that blue dude on my screen is just hype. I’m playing through X Dive Offline right now and it rules. (Read: It scratches my brain.) It’s also literally THE blueprint for what to do when you spin down a mobile live service game.

Original Sin (unless I’m wildly misremembering Divine). Not trying to convince you to go back, but for me it has some of the funniest writing in video games throughout the entire game. I played co-op with a buddy and cried laughing most of the time. Can see why some people don’t vibe w/ it though.
