Opinions are my own.

Roll-Hansen puts Lysenkoism in the context of political theory and history. Pringle describes the life of Vavilov, the opponent of Lysenko, and it reads like a thriller. There is a novel by Wladimir Dudintsev, White Garments, but I haven’t read it yet.

In contrast to its importance as grain crop, the market value of #quinoa as ornamental plant is zero.

We are interested in the genetics of flower traits. The phenotypic variation of quinoa flowers hopefully leads to exciting applications for breeding of this crop!

Very impressive demonstration of the rise of China as a scientific superpower in crop research!

All papers on #crop genetics and genomics in the latest issue of Nature Genetics were produced by scientists working at Chinese research institutes.

Today's #TDF2025 stage ends on Mont Ventoux.

Nice memories come back of my own ascent some years ago on my vintage race bike, a Giant Cadex 980C, which was the first mass-produced carbon fibre road bike from the late 1980s.

My youngest daughter just learned about Mendelian genetics in school, so we took an evening walk to the state variety trial in my wife's hometown.

We discussed how #genetics applies to agriculture using #barley varieties as examples. So let's hope she wants to know more about the topic😉

New preprint led by our bioinformatician Mireia Vidal Villarejo on the demography of a maize fungal pathogen in Switzerland 🇨🇭.

Main finding: In a multiyear survey we observed a rapid replacement of established by exotic, tropical genetic lineages of the pathogen.

The highlight of our course on plant genetic resources was the excursion with the students to public and private plant breeders in Switzerland 🇨🇭. And I could show them my favorite swimming spot at Walensee.

Last ski climb and dance with the snow of the winter season in the beautiful 🇨🇭 mountains.

Gives sore muscles but also new energy to deal with to-do lists and deadlines😉

I just asked OpenAI's Sora to produce a short didactic video on chromosome condensation before mitosis (Screenshot👇).

Now I wonder whether I need to get better at prompting or whether Sora needs to learn more about biology?

New preprint led by PhD student Che-Wei Chang on using deep learning to predict the geographic origin of #barley genebank accessions and how it can be used in genome-environment association (GEA).

Take home: Prediction works well, but improvement of GEA is limited.

Last ski climb of the year today in beautiful Valais 🇨🇭.

Breathtaking panorama of the famous 4000m peaks of the Western Alps. A good place to let go of 2024.

I wish all my followers a happy, healthy and successful year 2025.
