Agree with the core point. And, as a level of nuance, would add that the half century+ of world peace rituals also might be moving unseen needles and/or playing out their effects on a longer timescale. Still out of our control, but not necessarily out of our realm of collective influence.

Third one feels most likely. Either legit or, shall we say, "medical catastrophe". (Not promoting such a thing, just noting it as one potential outcome. Would mean a lot of the ghouls around him could save face. They'll never 25th him, he'd run his yap and spill everyone's secrets.)
