specifically I think one guy on the writing staff had a bone to pick with what he feels are specific bad parts of modern (2009) Japan and decided the best way to do that was through a convoluted and boring anime. it does however have character designs by Umino Chica which elevates it significantly

Nah, they were always this horrible. The articles with questions like this were just reserved for police brutality cases they reported on and mass shootings by ‘lone wolves’.

everything other than a super low-end strategy, like the one that has propelled Lectric's market growth, seems to be a dead end in terms of product-market fit... it will be interesting to see if the new Rivian spin-off Also can change that, but it won't be easy
