Flotsam and Jetsam. Folklore, customs and odd guilds, gangs and groups.
Context, context. Seeing this photo of 3 dog skeletons in a vague circle, my mind immediately went 'what iron age ritual is this'. But in context: "tentatively" C16 culled hounds. (Dersingham walled garden excavation, Joshua White in Medieval Settlement Research Journal 2025)

Nice syncing as the book & keys divination method (key in a bible drops out or turns book to yes/no question) used to find thieves/treasure in @magicnotwitches.bsky.social 's 'Cunning Folk' are in Haggard's 'I Walked by Night' used to test love (the key positioned in the Book of Ruth). #folklore

"Oh Lamentable Death..." A lament found under the whitewash of Acle church seemingly from the C14 Black Death

Avebury cove, one of the stones has a small circular impression in the centre of a larger circular shape. A natural cup and ring mark? (I've been here so many times & had never even noticed this before - Avebury keeps on giving.) #standingstonesunday

Avebury from inside the ditch. Usually the SW ditch and bank is roped off but had a lucky day when they were open. Totally different sense from inside the ditch looking up. #standingstonesunday

The folk tree. An interesting dilemma for custodians of places used for folk customs E.g. this tree & Avebury's that get everything from ribbons, crystals, plastic bags and knickers tied to them. On one hand an offering, on the other detritus that someone has to clear up at the end of a long shift.

Nice to read in the 'Prophecy of Merlin' (not to be confused at all with the 'Prophecies of Merlin') that Moldy Warp from Little Grey Rabbit used to be a badass medieval king. Go Mouldwarp!

Authorised Giants only. Climbing a, very steep, Giant's Hill on way back from Cerne Abbas conference to be met with this top piece of graffiti humour.

Visit Dorchester for a brilliant day of talks about Cerne Abbas, come back with photos of the site of a massive Neolithic post circle in a setting to rival Castlerigg.

I want this as a poster, reminds me a bit of Bakshi's rotascoped images.

As it is Pentecost I have been copying King Arthur and waiting for a marvel to happen before breakfast. No marvels and it is now dinner time, so I have gone out on a quest for pizza and a doughnut.

'Normal for Norfolk' has a long past. In mediaeval Descriptio Nothfolchiae inhabitants hold their goods while riding to save their horses the weight, get drunk on weak beer, save money by not eating bread they bought, mistake a toad for a partridge & shout 'we're not at home' when someone calls.

Reading of Arthurian hero Cai fighting a big cat in the Black Book Of Carmarthen... I know it's probably a lion but I just think of Twinkle the giant kitten from the Goodies
