I'll add that no matter how much prep you do, there will always be a ton of things you didn't expect. You are essentially learning a new way of living in the world, which can be both good and bad. I can speak to more specific things if you're curious, but each experience was so different. 2/2

I moved to different countries as an adult 3 times. There is a lot to consider. Distance from my family. Ability to get around with my disability. Language fluency (opting for one postdoc in Australia over Switzerland in part because of that). Cost of living vs. salary (i.e., quality of life). 1/2

My great uncle moved around a fair amount, so who knows where he learned it. *shrugs* But yeah, my southern family never made it. We have far better breakfast options in the South IMO.

The first time that I saw this was when my great-uncle made it for me when I was a teenager. He called it "toad in the hole," and he grew up in Michigan. I grew up in South Carolina and Georgia.
