“Biderman’s Chart of Coercion.” Methods identified: isolation (no social support/solitary confinement), monopolize perception (attention on immediate situation), humiliation/degradation (resistance > costly than complying), exhaustion (inability to mentally/physically resist), threats (despair/cost 4 disobedience), occasional indulgences (arbitrary ‘reward’ for compliance), demonstrates omnipotence (futile to resist), forcing trivial demands (creates compliance w/trivial demands). Sociologist Albert Biderman developed this tool in 1957 to illustrate the methods of Chinese and Korean torture on American prisoners of war from the Korean War — he was specifically tasked with learning “why our guys ‘cooperated’ w/their captors.” The chart lists eight methods of torture that will psychologically break an individual. The chart was used as a “how to” training tool for gitmo officers in 2002. Maybe Fred the Terrific Tabby has found them over the 🌈 🌉 & has shared catnip & sunny spots with them. He went unexpectedly a year ago.

He went to the Great Catnip Garden over the Rainbow Bridge very unexpectedly last fall. He was a very good boi.
