The awful reality of what Forest Fire Management is doing to our precious forests.

The spelling is the least problematic aspect of this ad (in a Grand Designs magazine issue with a sustainability focus).

In 2021, Greenpeace looked in depth at all the current forest certification schemes.

It called PEFC 'a weak and industry-dominated certification scheme, especially in comparison to the FSC'.

No state native forest logging agency has been able to obtain FSC certification.

Then we have a director of merchandise at Bunnings saying this: PEFC-certified forests indicate sustainable management.

Well, that's a big claim.
September 19, 2025 at 11:56 PM
There is simply no evidence for this oft-repeated assertion.

Latest ABARES data for hardwood imports (in cubic metres) shows they have largely flatlined for over a decade.

This claim is by Sue Baker, a University of Tasmania conservation biologist and associate professor of forest sustainability science.

Same reckless disregard for endangered species protection, same government department. Less than a year apart.

Unlike FFMV, we go and look at the ecological consequences of a planned burn. It ain't good.
July 27, 2025 at 7:37 AM
Why FFMV sucks. Another installment in a never ending series.

That girl is all of us.

He appears to have moved on to an even more unlikely position, Director Forest Health.
July 3, 2025 at 2:38 AM
As of last year it was Bill Paul.

But given his previous position as VicForests' Director of Environmental Performance lol, don't expect much. 🙄
July 2, 2025 at 7:07 AM
Admittedly, amateur stuff compared to the efforts of FFMV'S Loddon-Mallee division near Inglewood last year.

Spin: 'Fire behaves differently during a planned burn and usually spreads slowly and at a lower flame height than a bushfire' (from the FFMV website)

Frequent reality: canopy scorch and a collapsed hollow-bearing tree.

From Mt Despair, near Toolangi. Burnt this autumn.

Total legends, everyone who contributed to this fundraiser. Thank you.

Apropos of nothing, here's Tim Lee giving a speech at a 2024 Forestry Australia conference.

'... as some claim'. Top quality journalism right there.

Who makes this claim?
June 21, 2025 at 11:14 PM
I mean, seriously. As if seed collection can't occur in the absence of a logging industry.
June 21, 2025 at 11:14 PM
Also, this article claims it contributes $1.2 billion to the economy.

A surprising figure, given native forestry logging in Tasmania only produced about $100 million in value 2022-23.

I checked. There is a total of about 2200 jobs across both native and plantation forestry in Tasmania.

Turning a swamp into a smoking ruin? Just in a day's work for Forest Fire Management Victoria.

This is an incredibly detailed account of how incredibly destructive this government agency is.
June 14, 2025 at 10:08 AM
Well, the Glenburn-Eagles Nest burn won't be happening this year! Operational reasons, they say.

Thanks to everyone who signed the petition, joined the spotlighting nights, day surveys, or contacted decision makers.

Saying your opponents are wrong and you've got the facts on your side?

I've seen this script before.

The reality of a planned burn. Watch to see what happens to tree hollows, even some distance above the ground.
