Software engineer, fiber artist, reader, enthusiastic appreciator of interesting details. I like understanding systems and stories. she/her is fine.
I assume at least some of it is the inverse:
1) you start seeing ads for xyz
2) without consciously noticing the ad, you start thinking about xyz
3) you bring up xyz in conversation
4) you see yet another ad for xyz and it sticks out to you this time because you were talking about it

That makes total sense to me! It's kind of why I switched away too, although I have much less experience in this domain and didn't think to switch to something positive. :)

I can see this all also being affected by cultural differences in language, too. Like does "Dinner in ten minutes" mean "wind down what you're doing, wash your hands, clear the table, and set the table" or is it just a schedule announcement? Or something in between?

Organizing some sort of support group for people in that institution? Saying, "if this is affecting you and there's something that would be helpful from people who are less affected, tell us. We'll put an anonymized list in the next newsletter"?

Both of those seem very small potatoes, though.

Thank you. I think I understand now, and have bonus fun visuals of shoveling cat pictures instead of snow. :)

Thank you.

I think for the third I was aiming at something of the neighborhood of "I want to shovel my sidewalk" (which I see now is also linguistically wrong for this), but I veered off because after this week, no, I absolutely do not want to do more of that.

(after some poking around b/c the terminology is new to me)

Is it the difference between "Shovel your sidewalks!", "I wish all the sidewalks were shoveled" and "I am going to shovel my sidewalk after breakfast"? (but with violence instead of shoveling)

Minnesotans don’t want ICE to abduct our neighbors a little differently.

We want all of it to stop. And we’ll keep doing everything we can to make that happen. If you’re outside of the state, you should too.

A version of this that works well for me is to have those places seem somewhat flimsy. I could put the incoming mail or a thing to take tomorrow on the rickety bamboo shelf by the door, but it never got crowded with layers of stuff because I subconsciously didn't want to break it.

Yes, totally-not-a-fed-or-a-troll, anybody can add you to the Signal group chats. There are exactly 3 and they are local to all locations.

I can't tell which parts of this are attempts at manipulative "incompetence" and which are just incompetence.
