Coastal scientist and applied statistician. Especially interested in water quality and other long-term monitoring. Non-workily, I enjoy birdwatching, reading, sewing, bread-baking, and looking at cat pictures.
I installed a cat trap in my home office so I don't get cute pics like that anymore, but I do get a lot of this alternate cuteness.

Schimel is the oldest of mine! Loaned both to a coworker recently. For the record, we leave a lot of books lying around and this is only the 2nd one Rubi's gone after like this; you should definitely be flattered 😂

Accepted version (not journal version) of analysis plan paper is on researchgate. Happy to email the nice-looking journal version if you want it. They took out all my Oxford commas though, sadface.

It has led to numbers though - over 100 books in 2023! More often the 70-80 range. This year is my slowest since starting; I'll probably end up around 50. But it's about the habit, not the numbers, and I'm really enjoying the habit! 7/

Just like the lack of a numeric goal, and the one paragraph thing, it's about keeping the pressure off. 6/

Abandoning books that aren't working for me is freeing. I didn't used to; but if I start to dread reading time, it's time to let that book go. This has made me unafraid to try different types of books - and I've found a lot of good ones by being willing to *not* lock myself into them. 5/

I don't think I've ever actually stopped at a paragraph. Sometimes Hubs is super sleepy and ends up reading the same paragraph multiple nights in a row. Whatever, it counts. 4/

Our only rules are, it has to be a book (doesn't matter what kind); and you have to read at least a paragraph (can be a one-line paragraph; still counts). "I have to read my paragraph" is totally doable no matter how tired we are, and usually we end up reading more. 3/

At the end of 2018 I was listening to a podcast where people were discussing their reading goals - as in, number of books - for 2019. A numeric goal seemed too stressful for me, so I made the goal "read every night." And started in Nov. 2018. Hubs got on board sometime in 2019. 2/
