Also, you can come up with your team ethos, but it’s no good if the players don’t get it, or aren’t able to do it. The Stokes/McCullum way clearly hasn’t eradicated “weak men” from the squad…so they’ve not implemented it very well, have they? It’s a bit late now. Pope has played 63 tests.

When Stokes decided to bowl a long spell with an arm hanging off against India one message he was sending out was that he didn’t trust anyone else. Now he looks around for lieutenants and can’t see any. Leading by example is still a fine art. It’s not as simple as “I’ll do it”.
