The tl;dr point is that Labour removed the pandemic relief for indies that the Tories had previously extended. So, while the multiplier is lower, it pales into insignificance compared with the impact of having to pay full (and increasing) whack.
But you’re right, the surtax wasn’t as bad as feared

Define “not as awful as feared”… They’ve managed to screw small retailers as well as (admittedly less than feared) large retailers. That means small businesses go bust, and grocery inflation goes up. Win-win!

The budget. Business rates.

The reduction in the multiplier to 38.2p BUT the removal of the 40% business rates relief PLUS an increase in the rateable value means a 45.9% increase in my business rates for next year.

Yay.

Argos expanded to the Netherlands way back when, but nobody "got it" and they pulled out pronto. They also pulled out of Ireland a couple of years ago
It was those little blue pens in doctors waiting rooms that did it for me - I took some French investors around stores in the 1990s and, like... 🤯
