He did the same “swoop in late and save the screenplay” move on Shakespeare in Love, which is not surprising considering his stage work, but still that’s a hell of a range.

His continuation in the role has kept Spider-Man as a franchise more like James Bond, which I’m increasingly convinced is the right register for superhero movies. Only Batman and Superman also get this right for obvious reasons.

The craziest bit about the Triangle Era is that Byrne (as big a name as you could point to in the biz) had just done the relaunch, and then the line was given over to Dan Jurgens…a guy who had drawn a few fill-ins. There were some veteran names in the mix at jump, but it was really a bunch of kids.

I think one of the Wizard guys who isn’t on here has been rereading all these via the library (he just finished the big Exile omnibus which may contain material not easily found elsewhere). If no one else gets you, I’ll solicit his take.
