Over the years, the Omoyenis built a meaningful connection with Veronica. Now, Veronica could not imagine life without them.

Quiet and shy by nature, Veronica was never interested in being adopted. This did not deter away the Omoyeni family. In fact, it made their relationship with her all the more powerful through understanding and trust.

The importance of belonging:
Kids in foster care want to feel rooted somewhere — to know there’s a place, and people, where they are wanted, included, and not temporary.

Exhaustion from transitions:
Constant changes in homes, schools, and caseworkers can be taxing on anyone. It can be hard to settle, trust, or feel grounded.

Fear of new placements:
Every move means new rules, new adults, new expectations, and the fear of starting over again with people who may or may not stay.
December 8, 2025 at 10:00 PM
The importance of normalcy (“just wanting to be a regular kid”):
At the end of the day, kids in foster care are just kids and deserve to enjoy the experiences that kids outside of the foster care system have.

Desire for connection over pity:
Adults should define older kids in foster care based on their potential rather than past struggles.

Mistrust of systems:
Being in foster care can be abrupt moves and confusing decisions. Plans change without explanation. So, grace and understanding need to be given when kids in foster care are wary of certain systems.

Missing their biological families:
Older kids in foster care should be allowed to want new connections and have those connections coexist with their biological families.

Being treated like a “case”:
Older kids in foster care are real people with personalities, ambitions, and humor. They are not files, placements, or problems to solve.
