A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness at Lyric Opera lived up to the hype! Billy’s a genius. Those songs are undeniable. It reminded me of being blown away the first time I heard it back in Nara in 1995. I used his Guitar World article on inspiration in my CCNY freshman comp classes.

The summer music continues. Friday night was Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony at Ravinia with my friend Tom and his family. Last night was Kim Deal at Thalia Hall. She sounded great! She played all of Nobody Loves You More, some classic Breeders, and “Gigantic.” So much love for her from the crowd!

Lauren Derkowski of Michigan is the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. When they were celebrating, I told her that I came to see her play, and that this was my first softball game. She said I picked a good one. It’s great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

Great talk by Haki R. Madhubuti at Chicago State University today kicking off National Library Week. He read poetry by and about Gwendolyn Brooks, and afterward visited the Archives where I played him a video of Brooks and himself speaking at the 1992 Gwendolyn Brooks Writers Conference.

Last opera of the season tonight: La Bohème. No Wagner on the schedule for next year, but there will be a Billy Corgan production for the thirtieth anniversary of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Seven performances at the Lyric around Thanksgiving. He’s kind of our Wagner I guess.

Oregon-Northwestern women’s basketball is underway at Welsh-Ryan. Caileigh Walsh was honored before the game for joining the 1,000-point club. Like all the greats, she takes a knee during the anthem. She’s got a tough defensive assignment on 6’8” Phillipina Kyei.
