The dark void of ideological thinking has rarely been more evident than in the celebrations following the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Even committed leftists were horrified to witness the sheer relish expressed online from those who seemed oddly eager to advertise their lack of basic humanity. The ugliness was still evident this week at the University of California at Berkeley. Turning Point USA — the organization that Kirk had founded and helmed — held an event on campus, in defiance of those who gloated over his death, that would have been the final stop of the college tour Kirk was on when he was killed. I was invited to appear as a panelist for the evening, along with the comedian Rob Schneider, the atheist philosopher Peter Boghossian and the Christian apologist Frank Turek. We had an enjoyable time fielding questions from the audience and discussing our shared commitment to liberty despite our many other differences. It was, as expected, a jovial and good-natured exchange of ideas.

Regarding the Nov. 1 news article “At the Kennedy Center, thousands of empty seats”: Having just heard the National Symphony Orchestra’s stupendous rendition of George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, I was dismayed to read of the Washington community’s failure to support our important local arts institutions during President Donald Trump’s takeover of the traditionally nonpartisan John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. I can well understand that Trump’s takeover has repelled many former Kennedy Center patrons and supporters. But quite a number of them have, unfortunately, decided to express their objection by boycotting performances. This reaction does nothing to help their cause. Rather, it punishes the orchestra, whose dedicated musicians continue to provide world-caliber performances. Washington is blessed to have such a fine hometown orchestra. If it — as well as the equally threatened Washington National Opera — falters or fails because of lack of financial support, it will be the city’s music lovers, as well as students, children and other future music fans, who will suffer. Like some conservative writers and a handful of hardy liberals, I’ve written repeatedly over the last several years about the threat to free expression from the left. Since 2020, we’ve seen White journalists and academics punished just for repeating words that qualified as “hate speech”; the issuance of inoffensive language manuals by groups like the American Medical Association and the Sierra Club; the removal of books from library shelves and bookstores because they trafficked in uncomfortable stereotypes, or because the authors were said to be bad people.

A nauseating thread from a nauseating liberal. 1 Voting is not about saying "I tacitly endorse all of this person's policies." It's about choosing your opponent. 2 I live in a state that lets me vote in GOP primaries and sometimes I do that. Is that because I support that GOP candidate's policies? Fuck no, it's because I'm choosing which opponent I'd rather fight in the election. 3 It's the same thing in general elections. For me, voting is not a moral choice, it is a strategic one.
