Nor is this the first attempt to resurrect the Villa dei Papiri from history financed by the planet's wealthiest humans. In the 1970s, another mogul sought to reconstruct the Herculaneum Villa itself: oil baron J. Paul Getty, whose Getty Villa in Malibu was designed after its plan to become a museum to house Getty's extensive antiquities collections. These collections are now curated by none other than the very Lapatin cited in the Nature article. An historical irony: the Villa's replica, which exhibited specimens from the volcano-carbonized Herculaneum library as recently as 2019, would itself be built in a precarious disaster zone. It becomes a parable for our time that Getty's Villa survived the devastating January 2025 Palisades wildfire because of a sophisticated fire suppression system as much of Greater Los Angeles burned, and just as Musk and DOGE--with the help of one of the Herculaneum scroll's digital unravelers--were priming to set ablaze the federal infrastructure underwriting how US scholars build and preserve knowledge. The technologically facilitated afterlives of the scrolls, DOGE, the Malibu replica's creation and survival: ultimately, all three of these examples represent the interests and special projects of billionaires, and all three find cover in deviant permutations of the Vesuvius fallacy.
