It’s extremely disheartening. I try convincing myself that most of it is just a really vocal online minority. But nowadays I wonder if I may have underestimated how many people actually hold such views.

This exact same logic applies to vaccines too, and untrained lay people ought not have any say in public policy there either. It's a real pathology in American culture that people have unreasonably high opinions of themselves
