I went to check and this is a real thing: "Coverd" - an app that you connect to your credit card that allows you to gamble over your debts. The nihilism of technocapitalism is going to devastate whatever is left of our social fabric.
Christians really need to experiment with alternatives...

I feel the need to reassure my American friends that there is simply nothing normal about this. It's brutal. If an Irish officer ever approached someone like this, the scandal would be so great, the Minister for Justice would basically resign. Our cops don't even normally have guns.

The only reason I haven't ordered @philipchristman.bsky.social's new book yet is that I'm planning to go to the American Academy of Religion conference this year and I always want one book to target in their massive publishers' exhibit.
