2 weeks since my last class-I can safely say that I’ve made it through another school year without catching an airborne illness in the classroom. Many students show up sick, but the combination of a mask and air purifiers work. I used to just think getting sick at least once a term was inevitable.

End of term! Our final class meeting for my 19th century visual culture class was all about making terrariums/Wardian cases. Earlier in the week we talked about ideas of nature in the long 19th century, so today we put some of that in to practice and got our hands dirty. 🪴 🌱

I’ve been trying to bring in hands-on experiential learning to the History of Photography class this term, but it isn’t easy during the dreary winter months. I promised the students that we would head out to use actual sunshine on the first sunny Thursday we had. #cyanotype☀️

Sunny days are great for noodling around with wet cyanotypes!

In my History of Photography class today we made photographs in the style of Margaret Watkins (early 20th century). I had a ton of fun pulling props together for the students to use.

Today my History of Photography class spent time with some of the incredible photographs in the @brocklibrary.bsky.social Archives & Special Collections. From daguerreotypes to Polaroids, we covered a ton of ground. #brocku #teaching #learning #historyofphotography #brockhumanities

Brought some old cameras in for my History of Photography students to explore today. We had been talking about documentary photography so seeing some of these old Press Cameras brought a new perspective to the conversation.

In my 19th century visual culture class today we did a workshop on scrapbooks. We talked about the social functions these books played and many students tried out making “ghost signatures.”
