That's true, Valerian was the nail in the coffin for big budget scifi standalone films for a long time and most of that was a marketing fumble more than anything

I think there's still room for good scifi one shots as long as the storytelling is tight. I think the market just heavily favors recurring viewership with an established fanbase which is why we've seen a slow creep into video games becoming TV series in the 2020s the way books had been in the 2000s
