How will Trump’s trade war affect global CO2 emissions and energy? Initial thoughts.

Note for those in UK who think an pragmatic alternative to net zero is LNG. The US and Russia are petrostate bullies that will leverage seller power. We need to double down on homegrown energy, particularly wind and solar.
Trump: "We have a deficit with the EU of $350 billion. And it's gonna disappear fast. And one of the reasons and one of the ways that can disappear easily and quickly is they're gonna have to buy their energy from us."

A reason why offshore wind has struggled over the past few years is because governments around the world have wanted to:
a) localise supply chains, b) remove subsidies, c) allocate more risk to private sector,
d) extract economic rents.

Cakism like this won't get us to net zero.
How quickly we decarbonize depends a lot on how we allocate risk. In an article out today by the Danish national broadcaster, I argued that government policy should de-risk renewables, and explained how this can benefit both developers and consumers.

Slightly concerning prognosis on the chances of UK offshore wind AR7 success by a guy who knows what he is talking about
THE NEXT OFFSHORE WIND AUCTION: LIKELY OUTCOMES

In 2023, I gave the fifth CFD auction (AR5) a 40% likelihood of attracting no offshore wind bids. I judged this to be unacceptably high, and urged the Government to rethink its approach to setting a ceiling for the offshore wind auction. /1

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

An important but under-discussed issue: Norway oil and gas is entering structural decline which will exacerbate the UK’s own structural decline.

Notwithstanding climate change risks, it means further geopolitical, cost, and security of supply risks #energysky

Fascinating article describing what Big Solar looks like from both a technology and project finance perspective
2 GW solar plant site visit: ‘park has 2,000 cleaning robots…30,000 trackers…3.8 million panels…20 weather monitoring stations…8,000 string inverters…only so much the human eye can take in…driven out to the middle of the park, takes several minutes…installed 10 MW in peak day…21.5 square km’
A closer look at Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi’s 2 GW desert wonder
The 2 GW Al Dhafra solar park covers an area of 21.5 square km in the sandy outskirts of the suburb Dhafra near Abu Dhabi. pv magazine visited to get the lowdown on the plant’s specs and how it...

This is an excellent little widget that provides a good breakdown of costs in the power bill stack. I would probably have characterised the capacity market as part of the wholesale market, but that is very much up for debate!

LNG from the US was a great way to displace gas from Putin, but good that it's huge carbon footprint (larger than coal!) is rationally acknowledged.
A bad day for the fracking lobby is a good day for the climate.

Norway’s position as the energy powerhouse of Europe will be coming to an end.

Even if you ignore climate change, it is still vital for European energy security that we see a big ramp up of offshore wind, onshore wind, solar, and nuclear to counteract the natural decline of the North Sea basin.
Even if Norway dismantles the oil & gas industry, there is a need for new investment & there will be a lot of value creation (income).

Maintaining production at current levels requires massive investment in new areas & significant risk of stranded assets.

I can see some upsides to this. It looks to be close to a large demand centre in Dongying city, the solar PV should compliment the yield profiles from the offshore windfarms further out. (1/5)

An interesting thought given the extent of European moaning about unfair green subsidies contained within the IRA.
DISPATCH @katemac.bsky.social @thepolycrisis.bsky.social
A Trumpist repeal of the climate portions of IRA, CHIPS would harm the US. Think of it as the opposite of global reaction after IRA passed. It creates billions of dollars in opportunities for other countries.

My first rambling and incoherent thread on #energysky 🙂

It's important that we learn the lessons of the past to better understand power dynamics acting on the current energy transition.
