Even though our Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Unit has only 5 investigators for the whole city, our work led to today's federal arrest of a homeless service provider.

The big federal arrest announced today of a LAHSA homeless services contractor grew out of City Controller Kenneth Mejia's ramen noodle case, which was from a tip about an Inside Safe shelter: lapublicpress.org/2024/07/insi...

We need a City Attorney and City Council that will empower my Office to fight for transparency and accountability on your tax dollars.

When it comes to the LAPD, the City will always find the money to fund them no matter what's been approved in the budget or what the City's spending plan is.

If they overspend, rack up liability claims, etc., City Hall will just take the money from elsewhere to give to LAPD.

If the City surpasses the budgeted amount, the City will need to look elsewhere for funding. That can mean pulling from the reserve fund or even defunding other departments.

This is why we launched an audit to determine what is the City doing to prevent harm and liabilities.

With 7 months left to go in the fiscal year, the City of LA has already spent $90 MILLION or 48% of it's annual liability budget.

At this rate, the City will surpass $200 million in liability payouts (like last two fiscal years). It's a BIG REASON why the City is in bad $ shape.

Yesterday, I announced that I left the Democratic Party in Jan 2024.

I couldn’t support a party that preferred to spend our tax dollars on bombs while Americans struggle to put food on the table. As City Controller, my job is to call out misspending no matter who is in power.

In January 2023, LAPD killed three people suffering mental health crises.

In response, our Office assessed the LAPD’s Mental Evaluation Unit (MEU) & found that LAPD requires a patrol-first, armed response in mental health calls for service.
