Longtime DC scribe, covering three presidencies (DC is fine, but I prefer the United States). Reflections on democracy, First Amendment, Boston sports, and jam bands. Simple approach: trusted source intel + research & data + analysis = smart solutions.
Scary enough for the right and campy enough for the left. Good wood.

Aerial drone view of the Boston Common today for #NoKings rally. Organizers say 125,000 patriots gathered today to send Trump a message that we are growing stronger, bigger and bolder.

Boston Police didn't like the drone and shut it down, but not before it took this great shot of the crowd.

Shot of Boston Common circa 11 a.m. from backstage. A little over an hour later an estimated 125,000 demonstrators would fill the Common to declare No Kings for America.

Beautiful day for so many kind souls to assemble to just say no to Trump and his cabal of haters and traitors.

New report from economists at conservative AEI slaps down Trump's biggest tariffs claims:

-His tariffs won't restore U.S. manufacturing to the 27% share of labor force of 60 years ago.
-Trump would need to double his tariffs to eliminate a trade deficit in manufacturing.

It's the Autumn Equinox. Good harvests to all on land and sea, and a peaceful Mabon for those who agree.

"The numbers on the economy could be especially concerning for Republicans as they prepare to defend their congressional majorities in next year’s midterm elections. More than two-thirds of Americans describe the state of the economy 'not so good' or 'poor', WaPo reported.

"A lot of building trades workers, a lot of union workers, voted for Donald Trump and his team. But they didn't vote to have union jobs shut down," said Patrick Crowley, president Rhode Island AFL-CIO, which represents the contractors. "It shouldn't work like this."

"I took these photos today near the National Museum of the Arts," Rachel Donlon said. "They make the rounds then disappear. It’s not making me feel safer."

It's Trump's made for TV occupation of the District of Columbia. Not much of a crime spree but what a colossal waste of time and money.

Ukraine and Europe have the largest stake in reaching a unanimous and fair ceasefire with Putin (who invaded Ukraine). As President Macron said today, "the future of Ukraine cannot be decided without the Ukrainians who have been fighting for their freedom and security for over three years now."

"It takes a long time for tariffs to work their way through the economy before they land in full on consumer's wallets. But early subtle signs are starting to show up in the official inflation data," Axios reports.

"Tariff implications are still playing out."

Trump's willy nilly TACO tariffs and punitive policies have investors steadily moving assets to perceived recession safe haven gold. Trump's heated rhetoric targeting the Fed is bringing the record highs for gold back into striking distance.

Temporary tax relief for some Social Security recipients isn't enough to offset Medicaid, SNAP, VA cuts that all form a very real safety net that keeps older Americans, disabled Americans and retired veterans alive.

Most people who received this email won't qualify for the full tax cuts, if at all.

Caution lights are flashing brightly as bellwether gold price surges while the GOP budget bill weaves through Congress.

Wall St gave Trump all the support it could to get its tax cuts, ignoring the costs. Now it's time to count the receipts, and rethink an overvalued market and more federal debt.

Cuomo stopped the bleeding, but with only 10% of the ballots left to be counted, he has no pool of votes to draw the kind of numbers he needs to cut into the margin with any meaning. Mamdani won't hit the 50% threshold, but the 2nd round of RCV is a formality.

If this holds, it's over. The head to head numbers are pretty good and trending well. Mamdani will pick up the lion's share of Lander votes in ranked choice, to backstop. Cuomo has no path to victory on this trajectory, and a limited path if he doesn't reverse the trend and close the margin.
