Makes me think of David Bowie’s button-eyes persona from ★

Thinking here of Gazza’s expression, although the level of intense determination on Vinnie Jones’ face is almost equally striking.
Infamous football photo from Wimbledon versus Newcastle in 1988 showing Vinnie Jones grabbing Paul Gascoigne’s crotch. Gazza looks startled and is leaning forwards, mouth wide open, in a sort of confused pigeon-like position with his elbows out at his sides. Jones is facing away from Gazza and is grabbing him without looking but his face shows a level of concentration and tension somewhat like an angry pitbull that has no intention of letting go anytime soon.

An advert showing someone about to bite into a burger they are holding with both hands where the face has been photoshopped so that the open mouth is so big it covers over where the person’s nose should be. Kind of grotesque looking but that’s part of the advert. The tag line should read ‘Lose your self in flame grilled taste’ but someone has used black pen to cross out ‘in flame grilled taste’ and has added the word ‘esteem’ instead. So we now see the distorted face about to stuff a burger into its oversized mouth with the hacked tagline ‘Lose your self esteem’. The ad is on the side of a bus shelter or something similar.

That mood reminds me of David Lynch’s comic strip ‘The Angriest Dog in the World’
Introduction panel and picture from David Lynch’s the angriest dog in the world comic strip. The first panel explains the dog is so angry he can’t eat or sleep, can barely growl, and is bound so tight with tension and anger it’s approaching a state of rigor mortis. The next panel has an ink drawing of a cartoon dog straining on his leach, the other end of which is pegged in place in a back yard next to a house and in a garden marked out with a wooden fence. A speech bubble shows the dog making a persistent growl. The comic strip typically used this same picture three times in a row, often with a comment from the house, with a fourth panel showing the same scene at night. The dog never moves and is always in the same growling position.

Carl Sagan’s thoughts (or words of warning) from 1995 about dumbing down are referred to quite a lot, with good reason, because they regretfully seem pretty accurate.

Interesting to think about this in relation to Jay Rosen’s distinctions between the media, journalism, and the press - not as interchangeable terms, but as interrelated:

Eric Morecambe wrote a children’s novel called The Reluctant Vampire, which also had a sequel titled The Vampire’s Revenge.

Pretty sure I borrowed it from a mobile library and read it when I was a kid. Can’t remember the details but I think I read it twice, so must have liked it.

‘GREENLAND NOT FOR SALE’

Protest signs & Greenland flags on the Dragon Fountain (Dragespringvandet) in City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen), Copenhagen, earlier today.
Handmade protest signs with stencilled text in orange and red saying ‘Greenland not for sale’ and ‘Greenland for the Greenlanders’, as well as Greenland flags, placed in and around the Dragon Fountain in Copenhagen City Hall Square as part of a protest/demonstration in Copenhagen on Sunday 19th January 2025. The protest is a reaction against Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland. At least one of the stencilled signs names Trump and says the land is not for sale. The signs are in English and Greenlandic (kalaallisut). There were also people protesting & speaking but they are not shown in this photograph.
