Ooh, big fan of Kelvin Helmholtz clouds here. Here is an interesting one i spotted a couple of years ago near Rangeley, Maine. I think it had burned off a bit, leaving only the arched tops of the “waves”.

I was also the scientific director of The HMS Beagle Project. We tried but ultimately failed to raise funds to rebuild the Beagle and retrace the second voyage.

For those of you who don’t know me from those days, I was a postdoc at @nhm-london.bsky.social and was seconded for a couple of years to be the science coordinator for the Darwin200 campaign. I developed and promoted a portfolio of research projects connected to Darwin and his legacy.

Amazingly, I went out for a walk right after posting the above and saw a barred owl close-up! It swooped low over me right after I took this pic and I caught a glimpse of its very floofy murder mitts.

Ugh. Maine’s vanity plates are so boring. I saw these in Montana and it made me want to move there (okay there may be some other reasons as well).

In all seriousness, the Winged Victory of Samothrace is spectacular and by far my favorite thing in the Louvre. I cried when I first saw it, and not because of any kind of build-up or back-story… I’d never even heard of it. It’s just that stunning.
