Looks like Birmingham has the largest authentic German Christmas Market outside Germany and Austria. Who'd have thought it. Edinburgh used to have a lot of German stalls but the organisers started charging too much for the pitches so there are few, if any, now. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Today I've bought a new mobile and case, several books, joggers, Filofax refills, and crossword books and happily none of them were in the Black Friday Offers.

Interesting article. Humans only started being owned by cats 3-4,000 years ago and cats only reached Europe 2,000 years ago. They've certainly made up for time, eh, @number10cat.bsky.social

Why is shop-bought puff pastry no longer all butter. Palm oil is bad at the best of times but rapeseed is often also added. Does anyone know of a proper all-butter puff pastry you can easily buy?

Such a shame. I really enjoyed Wycliffe though it seemed a strange dynamic with a Detective Superintendent teaming up with two Detective Inspectors. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

He will be remembered for his roles as TV detective Charles Wycliffe and fictional Labour MP Bill Brand.

Thief snatches 8ft Nutcracker statue from outside a bar in central Edinburgh. Three people simply walk past unconcerned. Unfortunately the vast majority of people in the city do not do anything in such cases. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

End, starring Clive Owen and Saskia Reeves looks really good. It's on at the National Theatre until 17 January. Was hoping to see it myself next month but had to change my plans. www.theguardian.com/stage/2025/n...

This looks like a good exhibition, I really like both Turner and Constable. The exhibition runs at Tate Britain from 27 November 2025 to 12 April 2026. Tickets for non-members are £24, members go free, and there are various concessions. www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...
Turner & Constable review – boiling portentous skies versus two men and a dog
JMW Turner is beaten by John Constable in this mighty show. But who cares when the work is so sublime you can hear the squelching and smell the river?

As fountain pens/rollerballs go, this to me is ghastly. Yes, I know it's limited to just 188 pieces worldwide and you get a keyring, cufflinks and lighter as part of the set...but... Still, Cult Pens has taken 20% off for Black Friday so someone may buy. cultpens.com/products/s-t...

The Wiener Volksoper has four performances of Bizet's Carmen in April and May 2026. The cast has not yet been published but if Katia Ledoux you are sure to be in for a great night. Saw it in September 2024.

There a four performances of Puccini's Tosca in April 2026 at the Wiener Staatsoper, starring Anna Netrebko. I'm not sure how wise that is with her well publicised past links to Putin That said, she has a bit of a reputation of pulling out of performances at short notice.

No surprise there, all four performances of Die Fledermaus at the Wiener Staatsoper, starring Jonas Kaufmann and Diana Damrau, are completely sold out. Not even standing room is available. Top price tickets varied from 295 to 255 euros.

Good grief, some translations are weird. I was starting to watch a German language recipe for Hühnerfrikassee (which translates to chicken fricassee) but the increasingly annoying auto-translated audio which, thankfully, can be turned off translated it as chicken fried seaweed.

Very sad to hear Alwyn Crawshaw has recently passed away at the age of 91. He appeared in many series about painting on BBC and Channel 4. He really got me into watercolours, not that I was very good.

Just finished watching Mike Leigh's Mr Turner starring Timothy Spall as JMW Turner. When you consider Tim spent 2-3 years learning how to paint you realise how important the role and the film was to him and all involved.
