Is Jonathan Meades dead? You wouldn't have had to pay for the travel, and you might have found it more original.

Therefore to symbolically revivify those symbols in performative action, as reminders that the present regime is not inevitable, to make its structural violence (as well as the more overt kind) visible, and to break the momentum of progress.

In terms of providinng an effective protest using this sythentic methodology one must follow the marxist tradition of seeing that the smooth path of progress (written by the victors, the Right) is interupted by fragments of lost battles - runes - which symbolically interupt (and spoil) the ideology.

This is different from positing "an alternative view" from without. Part of that argument must be psychoanalytical (why does the Right cling to certain fallacious beliefs - what symbolism are they seeking to protect), and ideology (what capital does it serve.)
November 29, 2025 at 9:51 PM
"this is wrong; this is how it should be." That's ineffectual, because it is part of the context of present ideology, and (as you note) is reframed easily by the Right.
There is then, a need for immanent critique: to dismantle the logic of the Right "on their own terms;" showing the contradictions.

you're right about Parks - her actions weren't the individualised actions of a black woman (a problem with the framing of Woke Identity politics), but part of an organised political movement.

However, I think you're wrong on two counts related to Rawls and argument. You start a premise from saying

Bad writing is when you bowl out a bad set of words, and you drop the bat going ow! with finger thrust in your arm pits.
I had a similar experience when I tried to emulate Stoppard with a history play (Spivati - a bad play about Philip Sydney). No-one was ever as accomplished as Stoppard in history.

Real Thing?) he had the line about good writing is when an idea is "thrown up" like a ball in cricket & given a little "knock" with the right words in the right order, so it might "travel" a great distance & have an impact on the reader or audience.

was that students carry books of wisdom; occasionally, one of those books is dropped & picked up by the person in the queue behind - & so it was with me. He was also a great teacher for writers in building an idea and exploring all sides of it: in (the

While I was never fond of his politics, he was a great influence (we all sigh at the same grand buildings, as he once wrote). He had the uncanny ability to get across profound ideas about language, history & the universe with highly entertaining metaphors. In Arcadia, I recall one such

This party has interested members of 50,000. It's the lowest interest of any party, and shouldn't even register as news-worthy.

The answer is perfectly simple: single-space lockable units for all, saving money from policing public spaces and who belongs in society.

And, ffs, stop addressing the Foucauldian self-auditing nightmare of "identity" as progressive, when it is the most regressive force in 2025.

(when, in fact, this is merely a reification of gender into a biological taxonomy, denying its socially mediated, historically contingent aspects) the state exerts control over who is visible, who is allowed access, while economic, class, racial, and housing inequalities remain unaddressed.
November 29, 2025 at 2:04 PM
All this woke, identity nonsense isn't a distraction from the far-right paradigm, but a part of it. This is an example of how neoliberal capitalism survives by controlling identity rather than addressing structural inequality. By legislating gender in narrow, binary, biological terms

there will never be a peace deal until the russian government is unseated. The depleted russian economy relies on war to keep going, as C4 news reported.

avoid this kind of this. It makes you more prone to habitual release. read philosophy, be stoic, be better.

Don't collect books. Fuck Benjamin on this point. Don't add to environmental problems by becoming Jay Gatsby. Only buy the few books to plan to read. Donate books you haven't touched for a month.

sad, but true.

If you struggle, can I suggest something? Read a short book of social theory - choose a paradigm that suits and relate your fiction or autobiography or history book to that paradigm. It will reinvorate your enjoyment.

treat your partner (or kids) like a canaries in a cage - send them ahead, if they show signs of illness stay inside.

I despise my home city, but at least we offer free bus travel for asylum seekers. Such a small cost for a huge benefit. Impossible to do without in rural communities near barracks.

If you really want to take down Trump (if you do), then you need a toolkit that combines immanent critique, psychoanalytic critique, ideology critique and gothic marxism.

I have a 10 min audio that will take you through that.

I'm not sure you've provided answers here, Zoe. You appear stuck in an impasse of saying that - by its own logic - the US government is not doing anything illegal. That people should protest: but what are they protesting against, merely based on their own diagnosis of democratic value?

A reasonably upbeat single, which would be improved immeasurably without the Mariah Careyesque step change and the Cerys Matthews gesticulating.

Maybe it's time to stop treating this novelist as Anna Madrigal from Tales Of The City, no?

I quite like Atwood - my favourite novel of hers is The Blind Assassin, a grand homage to 1950s melodramas - but treating her like a sage of great wisdom is the most Guardian thing of all Guardians.
