Seems to be a hot topic - apparently, 2nd time Ig-Noble prize 🏆!!

We discover that deletion of a small loop Plug-S (purple) renders the permanently open channel. The loop is perfectly aligned with the polysaccharide entry point at the other side of the barrel and with the anionic groove inside, so the partially cationic Pel has a straight way out

So, tiny movements of the loop help to couple the aspartate of PelC to different sites of PelB at the membrane interface
