Range is a red herring. People want more range because they're not confident charging in public, especially in locations away from home (e.g., annual road trips). They want an EV that can do the trip without having to rely on public charging.

Get infrastructure right, "range anxiety" disappears.

But I do agree with your assessment of the endgame: most EREV owners will likely figure out pretty quickly that a full EV would work for them & will end up replacing their EREV with a BEV.

(There are edge case exceptions, but they're pretty low-frequency.)

Disagree, and you hit the nail on the head with why: people know how to find and use gasoline infrastructure. They're a lot less certain & comfortable with charging infrastructure. So having that gas safety net solves a huge psychological barrier to electrifying transportation.
