One of my goals for 2026 is to write more. My first blog post of the year is now live:

"The Future Is Cooperative"

https://whateverthing.com/blog/2026/01/05/the-future-is-cooperative/

Wherein I discuss the co-op model as an alternative to corporations/startups, and share my experiences so far […]

Went for a bike ride today.

The trail took me past a cemetery. It was surrounded by chain-link fence.

And I wondered...

Is that to keep us out, or to keep them IN?

It makes me sad to admit it, but the AI/LLM grift is much different than the Metaverse blunder. No doubt, it will end differently as well.

I view it as more like Uber. Or, to go back a bit further, more like Juicero: it arguably actually does do what it says on the box, but in a very […]

Of all cinema's throwaway predictions that could possibly come true, it saddens me that the one from The Matrix appears to be correct.

The part about 1999 being "the peak of our civilization", not the part about machines thinking for us. We're not there yet, no matter what the marketing folks say.

Once again, I have failed to win a significant prize in the lotto max. Once again, I have failed to secure the funds to grow my fleet of sailboats.

And bill gates still hasn't given me that couple million dollars I rather impolitely asked for.

But at least it's sunny outside. I should go for a […]

I kind of like Glass's ability to make the taskbar monochromatic with a custom tint.

But when the apps have colour, it ruins the appeal. So now I'm wondering if I could use the accessibility settings to make a monochrome mode for the entire screen....

(Also, I do acknowledge that it makes it […]

Okay, I'll be "controversial", or even self-contradicting, for a sec:

I don't think X/Twitter should be banned.

I think the government, at all levels, should entirely stop using it. But that is not the same as a ban.

I've attended two community colleges in the past (canadian ones, so not the same level of chest-thumping about it as in the US), and both of them are emailing me to have me join their alumni network. I'm leaning toward no? But I'm not fully a no. There's some nostalgia. There's some interest in […]
