The entire explore loop is driven by this resource hunt. Which is working on me, but isn't *that* fun. TL;DR: enforcing one 'build' per play through is the super unfun part about skill trees.

The issue is that the weapon tiering system means you can't switch easily because you're gear gated *and* there is finite money and upgrade resources in the game since mobs don't respawn.

Avowed (which I'm enjoying a lot) hugely has this problem. The skill system is very well designed and respeccing is pretty cheap (should be free though).

I love to explore game mechanics and combat mechanics so I enjoy trying out different builds, but realistically I'm never going to have time to play through anything more than once. Games are often far too long - but that's a different thread.

I don't at all agree. I think some of the Diablo games (for example) had very well designed ones. For me the failure is when you have a switching cost so the choices are permanent or feel semi-permanent.
