It’s so true! When I visit my Nani in Southampton, I often wonder what she makes of all her grandkids with smart phones, cars and uni degrees. When her biggest problem was she didn’t have shoes, or the earthquake that happened whilst she was washing clothes in the river. We’re 2 generations apart 🤯

This stuff keeps coming up. This from our last but one subject, @kaylapainter.bsky.social - a fantastically future-facing electronic artist who writes music about solar system exploration, but also....

It's SO important to always realise how close in time and space we are to pre-technological life
And I just thought it was, yeah, just very colorful and something I wanted to know more about really, but there was such limited history in, you know, in my family and in Fiji, I guess, but like in my family in particular, because they're just not like, my Nanny's not educated, she doesn't really write, she can't... so, you know, some of the stuff that she knows, we will lose unless we write it down, because there's just no like, so little record of this stuff. And even like birth certificates in my family, like they are questionable as to like what date that someone was born on in my family, you think this is bizarre, but yeah, just they just lived in a very simple... they lived a very simple life. And they had children and they didn't register the birth in a straight way, they forgot what days they were born on and things like this. So yeah, it's, I think it's a bit of a tapping into something so different to my life. And I think that's so crazy that there was such a, you know, totally different culture that I wasn't really exposed to that as only one generation away. Oh yeah, it's so important to be reminded. We sit in a warm room with a computer and it's so easy to take this all for granted, but, say, my father-in-law was from the south of Italy, left school at 12 to herd the cows, right? World War II just ended, no bureaucracy functioning, and so even there written records are shaky. So, yeah, we do need to preserve those stories. Absolutely.
