Not really, it just took a while to find the right thing to go to, which turned out to be out of news and into documentary television. Many news people who were getting paid a lot of money didn't mind looking the other way and stayed.

But then "the real Fox" slowly began taking over every aspect. It was ... rough.

Same. I joined Fox just before it went live, and felt I was being given the opportunity to start a bona fide news operation, which is what they claimed they wanted. We (the actual journalists) did do that at first, and many folks feel the hard news coverage at first was pretty good.

Whatever flaws the author may have, he is 100% on target. I saw this happening to journalism in real time during a short (and regretful) stint at Fox News when it first started in 1996. I have never looked back at my decision to leave the news business, and mourn what's become of it.

And mine. And most people I know from NY.

Saw this and loved every second. What an ass hat.

As an old news guy, I find the scene where Wm Holden, the network news head, is watching Beale's rant in disgust (and with it the professional world he knew ending) while his teenage daughter instantly gets it and lights up, is particularly prescient today. And depressing.

I mean, I'm sure the Sproats are wonderful people but as a Mets fan ALL I care about is how their son pitches. It's supposed to be a broadcast of a baseball game, and an important one at that ... and we were robbed of hearing Gary shout "IT'S OUTTA HERE"

I really hope so. National-level journalism, where I spent most of my career, has become a daily disappointment on so many levels. Some good folks still plugging away, but the "institutional" media has let us all down.

I am glad yet sad that I'm not the only one feeling this way, Peter. This and how institutions that I believed in, like Journalism (where I spent much of my career), have largely collapsed makes the world seem truly sideways. Every day is disconcerting.

I mourn this loss. I worked with Mark for many years at AP Radio. To say I learned from him is ... an understatement. His gruff exterior hid a pussycat and a wonderful human being.

And it's frustrating as hell!

Perhaps so, but he's driving this team to a new definition of rock bottom. Been a fan for 6 decades and I've rarely seen a bunch a uninspired as these guys. The "expectation" that they'll be good was all it seems we had this year, and they coasted on that for awhile.
