Horrible news today that the govt is unilaterally directing the disbanding of humanities and social science panels from one of the most important research funds in New Zealand. A short but on point response from Universities NZ.

Great to be at the #NZARE2024 NZ Assn for Research in Education conference at @waikatouniversity.bsky.social this week. Yesterday I presented on how demographic/identity factors affect people's experiences of academic peer review (collaborative work with Kay Hammond & Julie Trafford of AUT).

We used the Mana model (by Melinda Webber and Angus Macfarlane) to frame a strengths-based look at what supported success for these Māori learners. Students particularly emphasised mana ūkaipō (sense of place), mana tū (sense of resilience), and mana whānau (sense of family).
#newpaper #openaccess: "A strengths-based exploration of Māori student success at university using the Mana model" - a closer look at the stories from Māori students within a wider study of student experiences in university teaching/social work programmes.
