Super plenary talk by @frantecol.bsky.social in the beautiful McEwan Hall today - the huge, long-term experiments she’s running highlight how important a longer term approach can be for getting meaningful data from field-based research 🤯

In other “things I learned today” - puff pastry dug out from the freezer with a use by date of 05-01-2021 will puff up when cooked but it does *not* taste good…

Sort of. He used 13C/15N labelled glycine to trace what was happening and found 13C progressively accumulated in the plant and *decreased* in the fungus as N in the agar increased 🤔
November 19, 2024 at 4:35 PM
When Nathan increased the N concentration of the agar, the fungus transferred progressively less N from glycine to the plant! So function of MFRE symbionts is affected by environmental availability of nutrients to plants… just like arbuscular mycorrhizas?
November 19, 2024 at 4:35 PM
He found a clear and consistent preference by the fungus for the amino acid glycine, on its own 🥃, in a cocktail 🍹; that fungus just loves glycine! But…
November 19, 2024 at 4:35 PM
Nathan established an elegant plate-based microcosm approach to offer a choice of labelled N sources to MFRE-plant cultures…
