I do think it's an ugly and silly name, and while it is (unfortunately) the one that stuck it never really broadly caught on (arguably neither has the genre) but I'm not really sure what can be done about that. I do see a particular (and highly distinct) lineage worth naming here, though

"A game in the lineage of System Shock and Thief" is a perfectly fine definition, and one which everyone here seems to agree on. People disagree on, essentially, formalistic means to sus out that lineage but that's simply because that isn't how genres work. Genres operate on history and vibes
