We love it there so much. But unless something radical changes, we likely will not resume until 2029...

We'd always fly in Thursday a.m. - it was so quiet - arriving in the city as the parade was dispersing. Dinner at N's favourite place, The Dutch in Soho. We've not been able to go for all sorts of reasons: pandemics, elder care, deaths, sick dogs, money worries, etc., etc. One day we will go back.

Absolutely, although for myself I'm not a big fan of the extra bulk.

A full mitten needs a bit of positive ease – make it about 2-3 cm/1 inch larger around than your hand so that there’s room for fingerless mitts underneath, and warm air. No gloves. Mittens are always warmer than gloves. Your fingers snuggle together to share heat. 9/...

4. Fingerless mittens should be worn with a bit of negative ease, stretching to fit your hands so that they stay in place, especially if you’re wearing them as an inner layer. About 1-2 cm/half to 1 inch. 8/...

The outer mitt should be a less soft/less pilly/hardier wool, and the inner pair can be soft and delicious. Use your warmest luxury fibres, they won’t pill as much because the soft fabric is protected. 7/...

I wear fingerless mitts inside my full mitts; if I do need to take my mitts off to drive the car or get my bus pass out or deal with the dog, most of my hand is still covered. I take it one step further when it gets really bad: a double-layered pair of full mittens over the fingerless ones. 6/...

3. Create a layered fabric, for more windproofness… stranded colourwork is excellent because the floats make a lining. I once made a pair of stranded colourwork mittens with both yarns in the same colour, as I wanted plain mittens to match a patterned coat. 5/...

2. A handknit fabric isn’t actually that warm, it’s got holes in it! Combat pilliness and make the fabric more windproof. by knitting more densely: use needles at least one size smaller than you usually would use for that yarn. A fuzzy yarn with a halo fills up those holes. 4/...

The downside to specialty fibers is that they’re generally pilly. Softness = fragility = pilliness. Look for them blended with sturdy wool. Create custom blends by working 2 strands tog: a hardy wool is made warmer & nicer by stranding it with a lace/sock weight of a lush yarn with a halo. 3/...
