I do this too sometimes, and one of my reference mangas (Blue Flag) also does this quite frequently, so it sure is a valid method!

I usually place speech bubbles first and build everything around those. But yeah, especially when you have a lot of text, it's hard to find the right placement XD

Speedlines and sound words are a personal weak point of mine. I have a big trouble placing them. I also mostly don't know how to transcribe certain sounds, and I dislike using the verb to describe the action, So I mostly use none. But I notice that they help a lot with reading flow and composition.
