I feel like I'm finally starting to get good at this. I planned for months to pack as efficiently as possible for my last trip to Japan (October, 2023) and was very proud of the result. I ended up with 9 shirts, a dress, a skirt, a pair of jeans, 2 kinds of shoes (I could have brought 1).

In "The Little Red Hen," a hen is baking bread and asks all of the other farm animals for help with each part of the process. No one helps, but then when the bread is done, everyone wants a piece. The point is that you need to earn what you get, but it's also a great point about prioritization.

You know it's a good talk when there's a long line to talk to the speaker after, even though it's the very end of the day! They were still chatting even 30min after the talk ended 😄 Thanks for another great #KubeCon!

Takeaways: prioritize Kubernetes Security over check boxes.
If you implement strong Kubernetes security that takes into consideration the points in this presentation, you'll have a strong posture and be in a good place for compliance.
November 15, 2024 at 11:38 PM
A dark secret: your Kubernetes Security will mirror your org chart. How well people get along, which areas are closer. These things will be reflected in your security posture.

Monitoring and logging architecture.
2 main types of logs: application, and system component & platform. When and how much do you log? What tools will you use to manage and correlate your logging?
November 15, 2024 at 11:38 PM
Admission Policy Criteria. Trusted images, having an image approval process and criteria, how could admission policies break deploys, if some kind of security issue happens during runtime, who handles that?
November 15, 2024 at 11:38 PM
Runtime security concerns. Container drift, seccomp and similar tools at the kernel level, security tool support, consistent enforcement of policies.
November 15, 2024 at 11:38 PM
Kubernetes is the guardian. It's an important gate that can enforce your security rules across your workloads.

Consider the container supply chain and your software development lifecycle.
November 15, 2024 at 11:38 PM
It's important to design your containers for your applications with security in mind too. The reminders in this slide are great. Unnecessary processes, running instances are not the same as container images, a container is just software.
November 15, 2024 at 11:38 PM
There are so many tools to control segregation of resources in Kubernetes! Namespaces, container styles (visor, kata), the cluster boundary, and more!
