But here's the good news. We are not alone in these times. Jesus is right there beside us, all of us, transgender and cisgender, giving us strength, courage, and peace. He is giving us wisdom. He says not a hair of our heads will perish – and by this, he means that we will have eternal life. We will gain our souls when we endure. So have courage! Stand up for what’s right and don’t be afraid! As Paul wrote to the fledgling Christian community in Rome, who themselves were facing persecution, that “we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” In Hope and Love, Karlie ❤️ Karlie in pigtails and blue t-shirt that says "Resist!"

Indeed, I was almost one of the names on this list this year, as my friend @celestefinally reminded me. These images are a celebration that I'm alive. Of course, it's Black trans women that are murdered in the greatest numbers, but we all take our lives in our hands when we leave our front door in the morning. We know we may not return home alive that night. For us, persecution can be a daily reality, although it's not because we follow Jesus. It is because of the words of those that I think Jesus would consider false prophets, those who claim to follow him but persecute the innocent. They may say, “God doesn’t make mistakes.” “You’re not a real woman (or man)” “There’s no such thing as a non-binary person. God made two genders, says so in Genesis!” “The Bible clearly states in Leviticus that for a man to wear women’s clothing is an abomination before the Lord!” And of course, “If I see you in the bathroom with my little girl, I’m going to get my shotgun.” These have all been said to me.
