So true, Jill! A good debater can 'win' purely by being better at debating. Even on the wrong side of an issue or without solid facts to base their arguments on, they can use charisma and debating technique to get the upper hand. It means less than nothing for grappling with an issue.

One view might be that The Mad King did a good enough job making himself look like an idiot, and there was nothing coherent to respond to. But I tend to agree with you, that a sound, rational response that simply lays out a vision and gives a contrast to the shitshow would have been great.

I deeply appreciate you and all who called this out back then. Being a nobody with little political insight, even I could see the edges of something bad coming, but those of you who saw it and raised the alarm are owed a debt of gratitude by everyone, a debt that sadly will largely go unpaid.

I've said this all along, and I mean it. The ONLY way he will ever get a vote from me is if he is the general election candidate (please no!) there is no choice to keep Trump or his heir out. Even so, I will have to hold my nose. I've no desire to replace The Mad King with The Mad Court Jester!

Honestly, it looks like a pretty decent buffet to me, but yeah, my first thought was not "that is just over-the-top extravagant." And injecting a dose of antisemitism overlayed with several other prejudices, as you point out, just weakens actual criticism that is more than richly deserved!

Any calculus based on an othered minority being "only" so much of the populace is just bad fucking math.
I can't agree with anyone who has to see a threshold of people as enough to actually fight for (or not).

Long term, as a true cult of personality, I would bet it dies. But it will take a bit of time, and the interim will be defined by an all-consuming war for control. Nobody in the upper echelons of the cult has the charisma to truly control it, but many will desperately try. It will be very ugly.

And all the technical, maintenance and support folks should be second - about 20 years later. The tidying up would be a mess, but it will be worth it.

I think I do. I find it hard to credit you writing things that are "not good"! But I do get what you're saying. And I will keep trying. Not for anybody else to see, just for me.

Kind of a footnote to that is that I did (and do) some real writing since then. I'm not good at that either, but I created a single poem I loved about my truest self. I deleted it in a time of depression, and I regret it to this day, even though I doubt it was objectively good either.
