Seidenberg could go further, & note role of organizations like the Reading League in elevating Kilpatrick & Moats as patron saints. And fragmentation of our K-12 system, leaving districts to figure things out for themselves, enabling influencers. These American overcorrections happened for reasons.

The US Science of Reading movement had prominent influencers (Kilpatrick & Moats, plus the widely-promoted products Heggerty and LETRS training) promoting philosophies about PA which are poorly-supported by research.

NYC enrollment is down 12% since 2019, which is huge in a sector that has a difficult time contracting (closing schools, shedding staff). Mamdani can’t afford further declines.

I also believe advocates for advanced academics need to expand their focus to promote reforms that reach all students.

CKLA curriculum & content framework are different. See attached timeline.

I am not an expert on MA in the 1990s, but I know CKLA was not yet available.
