Their mass resignations from Deadspin were a high-visibility national labor story that major newspapers covered, with two U.S. Senators posting statements of support. The broader story was notable and still fresh enough that The New York Times wrote an exclusive piece about Defector’s launch in July 2020 and sent a push notification in their app to it. The CARES Act, passed in March 2020, established the primary pandemic unemployment benefit programs, enhancing my co-founders’ unemployment checks and providing at least some measure of economic relief while we continued figuring out what Defector would look like and who was ultimately willing to take the leap. Americans were broadly at home, with extra discretionary dollars in their bank accounts, spending most of their time online looking for fun things to do and read and, most critically, buy. Patreon and Substack had been around for long enough that many consumers were growing more and more comfortable with directly supporting their preferred media creators through subscription dollars, but we were still some time away from the constant sense of “subscription fatigue.” Implicit in Point 1 but worth calling out separately: My co-founders had all worked at notable websites, at Deadspin and other publications prior, that reached millions of people each month. They wrote and edited dozens of blogs a month, which honed their voices and their craft and allowed them to build their followings, and those followings served as the starting point for the audience for our new website. No collection of journalists trying to start a new publication today could replicate the above conditions. (How many high-visibility blogging jobs are there left to even quit from?) Starting any new venture is difficult, but the conditions that Defector launched under were practically Easy Mode compared to today’s media environment.

Sixteen hours passed ... and I was still sitting there at 1:30 a.m., alternately slack-jawed, horrified, devastated and just plain scared. You want to talk about a TV marathon? This was like nothing we've ever seen. Like everyone else, I was flipping channels searching for information, answers, videotapes, explanations -- anything -- and the hours zoomed by at warp speed. Looking back, the day feels like an unhappy, restless blur. The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now -- with somebody -- and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives. It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy. Osama bin Laden may be a primitive "figurehead" -- or even dead, for all we know -- but whoever put those All-American jet planes loaded with All-American fuel into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon did it with chilling precision and accuracy. The second one was a dead-on bullseye. Straight into the middle of the skyscraper. Right now I have one of those ghastly Vitaly Potapenko-type beards going ... and I don't care. I'm not shaving until Team Bush pulls a Maximus and we have our vengeance on somebody. I've never felt emotions quite like this before -- rage, vengeance, it's all there. And it doesn't ever let up. I almost feel irrational right now, and I'm probably one of the most rational people you'll ever meet. I feel like a few cowardly people changed our lives -- forever -- and somebody needs to pay for it. I can't stop thinking about it. Still, there were a few things that made me feel good this week, even if it was the worst week of all-time: The way our government and the American people rallied around the President ... the you-can't-even-quantify-it courage that New York City firefighters and policemen have shown over the past three days ... hearing the stories of heroism that trickled out over the past day or so ... hearing those random stories from people who were supposed to have been at the World Trade Center on Tuesday morning but ended up not being there for one reason or another ... Getting e-mails from 30-40 readers Thursday who were just making sure I was OK (because I hadn't written a column in a few days) ... President Bush getting choked up Thursday morning (say what you want about the guy, but he seems genuine enough) ... walking around and noticing that people seemed friendlier in general (strange phenomenon) ... waking up Wednesday morning and knowing that it wasn't Tuesday anymore. We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say. Maybe Afghanistan, maybe Pakistan or Iraq, or possibly all three at once. Who knows? Not even the Generals in what remains of the Pentagon or the New York papers calling for WAR seem to know who did it or where to look for them. This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed -- for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now. He will declare a National Security Emergency and clamp down Hard on Everybody, no matter where they live or why. If the guilty won't hold up their hands and confess, he and the Generals will ferret them out by force. Good luck. He is in for a profoundly difficult job -- armed as he is with no credible Military Intelligence, no witnesses and only the ghost of Bin Laden to blame for the tragedy.
