I can see why people leave low rated reviews for books now: I never really understood before. If I didn’t like a book then I normally just put it down to it not being a book for me and leave it at that, and I don’t leave a review. The author doesn’t need that.

I love the Moving Finger by Agatha Christie - page 175 of 234 and that is the first mention and appearance of Jane Marple. Page 175 - she is of course knitting as the talk of the poison pen letters is conveyed to her

Been following some advice I read recently about helping creativity. I journal anyway; an A5 page a day, a one line a day for five years and also an app for photos/music etc.
The new thing is journaling but in a blank notebook, & freeing your mind up for creativity by getting stuff out your head.

I’ve finished it now and I would still recommend the #book but I’m still deep irritated the blurb and the book do not match. I thought it was going to be a slightly gritty story about a woman who deals with being homeless in a city like Tokyo and meets up with people to recommend books to them. 1/2
It’s The Bookshop Woman by Nanako Hanako. Had the blurb been more accurate I still would have been intrigued but I’m disappointed I’m not reading the #book I bought for the very plot point that sold it to me 3/3 p.s I’m only halfway though but I totally recommend it despite the gripe about the blurb

There is nothing more annoying as a reader than a blurb which is misleading - literally a key description used to describe the main character and hinted at an intriguing plot idea is resolved between pages two and three and does not in fact factor as an integral aspect of the book.

My July 2025 reads (technically read): bit late I know but I was away on vacation over the beginning of the month and didn’t take a photo of the one book on the July pile before I left. Mainly because I had hoped I would maybe read another while I was away. I didn’t.

My June 2025 reads: it was a slow start to the month. I still have a couple of non-fiction books on the go from May which sort of stalled me a bit but then essentially I picked up a series of books all of which I pretty much read in one or two sittings.

Dwell by Simon Armitage - I’m not massively familiar with Armitage’s work. I’ve read a few of his poems and I have a copy of Paper Aeroplane in my poetry collection but I knew as soon as I heard about this one that this was a one I would love.

Why is this a Question? by Paul Anthony Jones. This is my second book this year by this writer, the first being the beautiful entomology collection The Winter Dictionary. Why is this a question? was even better.

Liquid by Mark Miodownik. This book has been on my non-fiction pile for years. Several times it has been at risk of being culled when I’ve been sorting my books because I thought it would just be one of those books I’d never read.

The Queen’s Gambit by Walter Tevis (and Begin Chess by David Pritchard) This was one of the books I started in April and finished in May after owning it for years. I had to wait before I picked up this book because I have seen the adaptation (also highly recommended)

Exciting day as a Back-garden Birder: saw the 1st Bullfinch of the year (male) which was beautiful, but also by sheer chance when I stepped out to water the garden and re-fill the birdbath two parakeets flew over head 😀. I knew we had them in Newcastle; so glad I finally got a glimpse #birder

My April 2025 reads: reading has continued to be a struggle and by the inclusion of Paul McKenna’s ‘I Can Make You Thin’ you can probably guess my mental health is not in a great state (no need to worry, I’m mostly fine and very well supported by my husband and parents).

For the first time in ages I don’t have a book on the go having finished The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks today. It took nearly nine weeks to read but I enjoyed every word, even if it was at times a battle to persuade my brain to let me pick it up. What to read next? 🤔 #book #reading
