Oh, man…my aunt lives in middle of nowhere southern VA, about 15 mins from Blackstone. Last Christmas when I was visiting, I went to pick up dinner from the only restaurant for miles and the hunters pointed their guns at me and my NC plates as I drove by. Civilization, it’s not. 😱

There’s not a lot of money, though, even at the state level. Americans really don’t want pay for things. Even in California, my taxes were pretty low compared to peers in other countries. The focus is always on cheap, not good. Then add to that a lot of corruption (in CA anyway).

Also, the Republican Party has been sabotaging efficient govt for decades so that they can push the narrative that govt is inherently inefficient. With more than half the country buying that propaganda, there’s little support to invest in progressive public infrastructure.
