The problem isn’t just historic inequality and how it creates imbalanced systems or destroys capitalism through contradictions. It’s also what intentional precarity as a weapon does to people mentally and emotionally.

Almost every day the fascist stories are accompanied with stories about record anxiety and stress and uncertainty and loneliness and hardly anyone wants to connect the obvious dots.

Fascism is a collective breakdown. People are struggling and there has to be relief.

I have my doubts about whether we’ll have free and fair elections myself. That’s my point. This focus on elections over collective, democratic action will be the end of us.

We must recognize what is happening and see that our institutions and current leaders aren’t just failing, they’re incapable of stopping this madness.

We have to see voting is only the most basic part of democracy and work within ourselves and within community to put a stop to this.

This feedback loop will not just stop on its own. Even if Trump dies, someone will fill that space and perhaps go farther than him.

This isn’t about elections. It’s about the need for recognition of the problem and a cultural sea-change. We can’t wait for heroes. It’s on us.

Openly calling for political enemies to be executed is, now, a fantasy, but make no mistake: Trump will, if allowed to, continue to push and distort and pervert the system until he is able to make that violent fantasy a reality.

And, simultaneously, his cultists will desire each escalation.

When Trump visits a dictator or welcomes them to the White House, he desires what they have. This is why he is most comfortable with authoritarians. They share a worldview and a desire. If he is not stopped, or whomever follows him, it will escalate to reflect those desires.

Trump’s escalation of fascist desires for murder and plunder and oppression is an inevitable cycle unless it is stopped.

He’s serious about destroying our rights and he’s serious about executing political enemies and critics. This is a real desire he is voicing. It’s not posturing.

Fascists share a worldview and it is shaped by fear, brittleness, and insecurity. This is why project their self-hatred on the world and seek control.

The disease of fascism cannot stop on its own. There’s no amount of control or “safety” that sates their fear. That’s why the violence grows.

Many of us grew up in authoritarian environments that would later become MAGA, and we’ve heard people calling for the kinds of violence and fascistic control Trump now gives voice to.

This has been festering our whole lives and even before. Ignoring that fact only makes this crisis worse.

Those who believe Trump is an aberration fail to see he is the embodiment of what millions of Americans want and desire.

Each time he escalates in his fascist positions he is giving permission for them to get worse and for the environment to grow more and more dangerous.
