The irony of the "moderation is fascism!" idea is that the only way to actually have reasonably free discussion is to have moderators prune out the abusive people who scream the rest into silence.

Jerks also drive away everyone else. Even without full-blown nazi's, most decent people don't want to be in a space where they are constantly having abuse screamed at them. The "marketplace of ideas" stuff just leads to whoever screams the loudest driving everyone off. Unless you moderate it...

And a lot of the bad moderation decisions just come down to moderators being overworked. Understanding the subtle social context of a comment or action is hard when you have a queue of 5 billion similar situations to deal with today.
